The lecture explores forms of Christian-Jewish dialogue and relationships that have been developing in Israel in the past decades, largely through the work of religious sisters. “Loving the Neighbor: A Case Study in Christian-Jewish Dialogue among Religious Sisters in Israel”

This project explores forms of Christian-Jewish dialogue and relationships that have been developing in the context of Israel in the past decades, largely through the work of religious sisters and contemplative nuns belonging to Catholic religious congregations in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Based on recent ethnographic fieldwork, it explores the experiences and theological views of a number of religious sisters who are deeply dedicated to interreligious dialogue, and to building better relationships with the Jewish people. In the conflicted interreligious context of Israel today, many of the voices shared in this paper understand their religious vocation to be dedicated to contemplation of the Jewish roots of Christianity and to love of the Jewish people.

Emma O’Donnell is a Postdoctoral Fellow, 2015-2017, who earned a Ph.D. in Jewish-Christian Comparative Theology from Boston College in 2014, and was a Visiting Scholar of the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning from 2014-2015. She holds a M.T.S. from Boston University (2009), and a B.A. from Bard College (1998). Her research field is Jewish-Christian comparative religious studies and the current focus is based on fieldwork in
Jerusalem, exploring Christian-Jewish relations, and contemporary constructions of the idea of the Holy Land within Christian communities living in Jerusalem.
